How Shame Shapes Your Life and How You Can Find Healing From It
Shame, as defined by Dr. Brene Brown is:
Shame is the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing we are flawed and therefore unworthy of acceptance and belonging. Women often experience shame when they are entangled in a web of layered, conflicting and competing social-community expectations. Shame leaves women feeling trapped, powerless and isolated.
Dr. Brown has spent a long time trying to deconstruct shame, in her words “what is it, how do we define it, how does it work and how does it impact women”. In this following video, which is 20 minutes in length, Dr. Brown boils this all down for us. From what shame is, how it impacts us and what are some steps to do something about it. It’s about living authentically, which is part of why many of us in the transgender community work so hard to get a get a grip around who we are as men and women and to live that authentically.
For me, watching this video not just caused my eyes to flood with tears, but, it also opened up some areas of my life, some realizations, about my own shame and lack of personal self-acceptance and self-value. I walked away from this video with a greater understanding of myself, and, what I need to do in the new year to be a better version of me. Please, go find a nice cup of Seattle’s Best Coffee (perhaps the smoothest coffee evah!) and just snuggle in to watch and really listen to this video. And many thanks to gal pal Grace for her kindness in sharing this with me!
